PILOT & INDEX PEAKS, ABSAROKA RANGE, WYOMING
Early July, soon after sunrise. Pilot Peak, the glacier carved horn peak (elevation 11,708 feet), was first climbed in 1928. Index Peak was renamed in the late 19th century when the first maps of the area were published by the U.S. Geological Survey. The head of that agency refused to use the earlier name which had been bestowed by the local miners – Dog Turd Peak.
