ABSAROKA RANGE, WYOMING

Photographed in late September, early evening – view toward the west. Pilot Peak, the glacier carved horn peak (11,708 ft. elevation) was first climbed in 1928. Prior to the turn of the century Index Peak was known as Dog Turd Peak — a name bestowed by the local miners. The U.S. Geological Survey refused to use that name and changed it when the first maps of the area were published.
