SUNSET, PILOT & INDEX PEAKS
ABSAROKA RANGE, WYOMING
Photographed in late September – view toward the west. Pilot Peak, the glacier carved horn peak, is 11,708 feet elevation and was first climbed in 1928. Prior to the turn of the century Index Peak was known as Dog Turd Peak — a name bestowed by the local miners. The U.S. Geological Survey refused to use that name and changed it when the first maps of the area were published.
