AUTUMN SUNDOWN
LAMAR VALLEY, WYOMING
Middle of September. Such brilliant, intense color occurs only rarely – when atmospheric conditions are perfect and the light is undiffused. A large storm system from the west has cleared the few remaining minute particles of dust and pollen from the air and reduced water vapor (which also diffuses light). Osborne Russell revisited his favorite “Secluded Valley” in 1836 and wrote in his journal, “There is something in the wild romantic scenery of this valley which I cannot describe, but the impressions made upon my mind . . . were such as time can never efface from my memory.”
